Black to timbuktu book club hosts second annual juneteenth cookout

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Juneteenth celebrates the freedom of African Americans from chattel slavery in Texas in the United States at the end of the Civil War in 1865.

The holiday has grown to national popularity where African Americans from all states celebrate the occasion.


Black To Timbuktu book club hosted its second annual Juneteenth cookout in Gainesville, FL on June 19, 2022.

The book club gathered at Oakview Park to pay homage to the ancestors by remembering Juneteenth and honoring those who were enslaved.

Members enjoyed barbecue and each other’s company with stories.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Black excellence was on full display at this year’s magazine unveiling hosted by a networking career and business group.

The Black Hats Collective founder and CEO, Ardell Hannah, was featured in the sixth issue of Gainesville Black Professionals’ SYNERGY magazine’s Juneteenth edition.

38 men were featured in the magazine which ranged from professors, commissioners, city leaders, and teachers.

The event was hosted at the Thomas Center where over fifty people gathered to support the men in the magazine.

Gainesville Black Professionals founder Virginia Grant is the editor of the SYNERGY magazine and there were 13 writers and two photographers who helped in the completion of the magazine.

Jewelry made to uplift communities

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — An organization is striving to help communities creatively. 

The Black Hats Collective launched its jewelry store on Friday, June 4 to uplift communities through its sales. 

TBHC founder Dell Hannah said he has been making jewelry for over a decade and is looking forward to see the success of the jewelry store. 

The goal is to use majority of the proceeds to help fund communities in need. 

There are currently 50 bracelets awaiting for purchase from customers. 

Hannah said bracelets can be shipped throughout the U.S. and internationally.
